The Benefits of Coaching and Mentoring

A mentor can offer fresh suggestions and options.

When you work with a coach or mentor, you have a trusted, safe outlet to confide in, help you develop current and new skills, help you increase self-knowledge, get advice and new perspectives from, and help you clarify your goals. A mentor can offer fresh suggestions and options.

Coaching and Mentoring Theory

Although a coach or mentor is not a counselor, it helps to have counseling skills. The same principles that an ethical counselor would adhere to are the same principles a coach or monitor should adhere to. Some of these skills and principles include: excellent listening skills, maintenance of confidentiality, excellent responding skills, the qualities of non-judgmental and objectivity, advising rather than telling, and an optimistic outlook. The coach or mentor has the employee’s best interests in mind.
